Nokia Messaging trial ending this September?

There are reports that Nokia Messaging trial is going to end at the end of this month (September 30, 2009). Some of the websites that have reported it are Zomg its CJ and Phone Arena.

The news seems to be correct as both the posts support their claim with an email (which has the same content) from the Nokia Messaging team. The content reads

Thank you for participating in the Nokia Messaging beta trial. We have enjoyed serving you, and have learned much from the feedback and input from you and tens of thousands of Nokia phone owners. This message is to inform you that the trial period will come to end at the end of
September and may not be available on your operator network.

Please keep in touch with your operator about this service availability. Thank you for using Nokia Messaging and we look forward to serving you again in the future.

Personally I have not received any mail regarding the end of the free trial for Nokia Messaging. If the trial ends I would not subscribe to the paid service as there are better options available, for example the Gmail app and the Emoze

A robust case for E71 and E71x

Opera Mini 5 – Tips for E71 users

In my last post I updated you on the new Opera Mini 5. I had also mentioned that some of the tasks were difficult to conduct on the Opera Mini (like text in capitals).

My friends at Nokia Addict have posted shortcuts for Opera Mini 5 running on a E71. They are

• Turn off inline editing by going to Settings –> Advanced –> Inline editing and turn it off. Now whenever you are entering text, for example URL, hit the edit option and it will bring up the normal E71 message screen that allows you to edit content the way you would normally do on a E71
• Press 1 or hold the “OK” key to copy and paste in Opera
• Some keyword shortcuts are
• 1 – Select Text or Open URL in new Tab
• 2 – Scroll UP
• 4 – Scroll LEFT
• 5 – Zoom IN/OUT
• 6 – Scroll RIGHT
• 8 – Scroll DOWN

Opera Mini 5.0 beta on E71

Opera Mini which is a popular Internet browser for Symbian phones has released a new beta version of Opera Mini.

It has some interesting new features which are

• Tabbed browsing
  Browse several Web sites at the same time. Jump easily from one to another.
• Speed dial
  The most visited websites are located on the speed dial which is the home page.
• Suitable for keyboard and touchscreen
  The browser works with both keyboard and touchscreen based phones
• Password manager
  Built in password manager for easy logging into websites.
• Built for speed
  The browser is built for speed on mobile phones as it compresses web pages by as much as 90% before displaying them on the phone

Got to m.opera.com/next to download the latest version of Opera Mini. I would like to mention that the application is still in beta so there might be some issues. I did not uninstall the 4.2 version and installed version 5.0 with it and both the versions work well on my E71.

Let me know what you think about the new version.

Update

There are some issues which are being faced by E71 users. For example many users complain that they cannot use the shift key therefore typing in capital is not possible.

A free screensaver for Symbian Lovers

For all Symbian lovers which includes most of the E71 and E71x users Symbian foundation has released a free screensaver which is awesome and pretty distinct.

The screensaver is Twitter powered (and appropriately name Tweetsaver 1.0). As soon as there is a post about Symbian on Twitter it is shown on the screen as shown below. In the background there is interesting background of clouds and animals. The artwork used is good and carries the Symbian foundation branding.

Centrl – Beta for E71 and E71x

Centrl is a location-based social network that lets you share your location with friends, discover the world around you, and learn about money-saving offers. You can access the app from your phone or your browser.

Nokia E71x Tips & Tricks: Get rid of those demo games and apps?

Nokia Experts has a post for E71x users which teaches how to get rid of extra software that comes preloaded on E71x (actually I still do not understand the whole deal of E71x by Nokia for the North America market). There are some features that are missing on E71x but are there on E71 as John rightly pointed out in the comments to the post on the dictionary on E71 by Nokia blog.

I was horrified to know that using these applications costs money! (except for yellow pages and Cellular video). No application costs less than $2.99 per month! To see the full costs please see the post on Nokia Experts.

All the more reason to get these application off your E71x! Mathew Miller kept the AT&T Navigator and WikiMobile application on his phone as he finds them useful. So head over to the post and follow the instructions (which are pretty easy to follow) and get a faster E71x!

Since I personally do not own a E71x please share your experiences about removing the bloat ware on the E71x.
